Background of the Study:

Multilateral security cooperation is a cornerstone of regional stability, particularly in regions affected by conflict and insecurity. The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council plays a crucial role in coordinating responses to security threats across the continent. In Kano State, the influence of the AU’s security initiatives is evident in efforts to promote peace, address insurgency, and foster intergovernmental collaboration (Adegbite, 2023). This study examines how multilateral security cooperation through the AU Peace and Security Council influences regional stability. It analyzes joint military operations, intelligence sharing, and conflict mediation strategies designed to mitigate security risks. The research evaluates the impact of these initiatives on local security dynamics and the broader regional peace architecture. By integrating policy analysis with case studies and stakeholder interviews, the study identifies best practices and challenges in implementing multilateral security cooperation. The findings highlight the importance of collective action in addressing transnational security threats while also considering the constraints imposed by divergent national interests and resource limitations (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem:

Despite the establishment of multilateral security frameworks, regional instability persists due to implementation challenges, coordination gaps, and political divergences among member states (Oluwole, 2023). This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the AU Peace and Security Council’s initiatives in promoting stability in Kano State, identifying the factors that limit the success of multilateral security cooperation and proposing measures to address these deficiencies.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the impact of the AU Peace and Security Council on regional stability in Kano State.

To identify challenges in implementing multilateral security cooperation.

To recommend strategies to enhance security coordination and regional stability.

Research questions:

How does the AU Peace and Security Council influence regional stability in Kano State?

What challenges hinder effective multilateral security cooperation?

How can security cooperation be improved to better promote regional stability?

Significance of the Study:

This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the mechanisms of multilateral security cooperation and its role in fostering regional stability. The research will inform policymakers and security practitioners on effective strategies to enhance collective security efforts and build sustainable peace (Okoro, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms
